South Korea’s Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung continued their strong play on the third day of the men’s Presidents Cup, but the gap between them and Team USA widened.
Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung combined for one win in the four-ball competition at the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada, on Monday (Sept. 29), but lost the foursomes match to give the international team one point.
The International Team, comprised of players from South Korea, Japan, Australia, and Canada, went 1-3 in fourball matches and 1-3 in foursomes.
The International Team, which was evenly matched at 5-5 after the previous day, fell to the Americans by a combined score of 7-11.
The International Team will have a tough task to overcome the deficit in 12 singles match-play matches on the final day of the tournament.
Playing together for the first time in the tournament, Kim Si-woo and Kim Joo-hyung got things started with a four-hole victory over USA’s Keegan Bradley-Windom Clarke in the four-ball match, leading by three with three holes remaining.
It was the only victory for the international team in four four-ball matches on Monday.
Siu Kim and Joo Hyung Kim continued their dominance in the next foursomes match against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
Trailing by one through 15 holes, the duo had a chance to turn things around on the 16th (par-4).
Kim Joo-hyung’s second shot caught the lip of a bunker short of the green, but Kim Si-woo hit a stunning lob shot for birdie, earning a rousing ovation from the gallery in support of the international team.
After tying the score again, Kim celebrated by circling the green in a baby-sleep gesture. It was a goal celebration after NBA superstar Steph Curry had scored.
“I was very happy that the ball went in when we needed it,” Kim said after the game, adding, ”Curry is my favorite player. He’s my favorite player, so that’s why I did that,” Kim said.
However, the U.S. team took the lead on the 18th hole (par-4) when Patrick Cantlay sank a birdie putt from five meters to take a 1-0 lead.
“We played really well in the fourballs,” Kim said. In the foursomes, it wasn’t the result we wanted,” said Kim, ”I could have played a little bit better, so that’s a little disappointing. I hope to have another chance to show a good finish next time.”
On the international side, Adam Scott (AUS)-Taylor Pendrys (CAN) won the only foursomes match of the day, defeating Brian Harman-Max Homa by two strokes.
Sung Jae Lim (JPN), paired with Hideki Matsuyama (JPN), lost to Cantlay-Sam Burns in four-ball and Scotty Shaffler-Russell Henry in foursomes.
