Long Islanders rally against Las Vegas Sands casino

Earlier this year, Las Vegas Sands reported an interest in launching a casino resort at the Natso Coliseum on Long Island, New York, but it was not well received by some members of the public. On Sunday, May 21, 2023, everyone was invited to “oppose the casino civic association” at a rally against the casino bid at the Nassau Legislative Building.

In January, leading gambling entertainment company Las Vegas Sands first announced its interest in one of New York’s three Downstate regional commercial game licenses. Each of these licenses is estimated to cost about US$500 million each, while the state is expected to announce three winners sometime in 2023.

On Monday, May 22, 2023, the Nassau County Council will hold a vote on a proposal to transfer the leaseholds of Nassau Hub and Coliseum to the game company. The 72 acres of space will be used to develop an integrated casino resort. That’s why on May 21, 2023, the day before, we’re going to host a rally to declare our opposition to the Casino Citizens’ Association.

Garden City Mayor Mary Carter says Sunday’s rally will be the last chance for the community to speak out against the project before the legislature makes the crucial decision. The mayor is a prominent opponent of gaming properties, but officials have no say in the vote on whether the lease will be transferred to the gambling giant.

Las Vegas Sands has promised to pour tens of millions of dollars into Nassau County if it rents the Nassau Hub and Coliseum. Previously, the game leader owned and operated The Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas Streep as well as Sands Bethlehem in Eastern Pennsylvania. Agreed to pay $54 million to the county after taking out the lease.

The company will pay the county about US$5 million in annual rents, as well as US$900,000 annually, to cover increased public safety costs. Once an operator owns one of the three full casino licenses, annual rents will increase to more than US$10 million, and the value of public safety factors will also be doubled.

Previously, the casino citizens’ union said the casino project would change the nature of Nassau County and the nearby area. The politically unaffiliated group said it would lead to increased crime, traffic and noise pollution and have a strong impact on local law enforcement and government.
