Malaysia will allow quarantine-free air travel to and from Thailand to the north and Cambodia to the northeast from Tuesday (March 15). The route will be limited to daily quotas for those fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Malaysia’s transport ministry said in a press release that the move was “part of a joint effort to reopen international borders.”
Malaysia’s vaccinated travel routes for air services with Thailand will allow designated airlines in both countries to operate up to six flights daily between Kuala Lumpur and Thailand’s capital Bangkok. In addition, up to four flights will be allowed daily on the Kuala Lumpur route with Thailand’s holiday island of Phuket. Malaysia said more routes could be added “if the two countries mutually agree.”
The agreement with Cambodia means designated airlines from both countries will be allowed to operate up to two daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Cambodian capital Phnom Penh routes. Malaysia said additional routes could be added “depending on market demand.”
Also on Thursday, local media reported, citing ministries, that from Monday (14 March) the daily quota for vaccinated people to use the corridor south to Singapore would be increased by nearly 60% from 2,160 to 3,420.
Malaysia and Singapore respectively refer to such quarantine-free routes as “vaccinated routes.”
The news comes as Malaysia plans to fully reopen to vaccinated foreigners from April 1, requiring them to be tested before and after arrival. Most of Malaysia’s 32.7 million people, considered eligible for vaccination, now have their jabs, according to government data.
