Construction of the first phase of a new international airport to serve Vietnam’s second-largest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City, is scheduled to begin in August, several local media reports cited comments by Vietnam’s airport corporation said on Thursday.
The facility in Longtan, East Nai province, could reduce the current airport transit time by about half for foreign visitors visiting the Grand Hotram Strip Casino Resort in southeastern Ho Chi Minh City, Walt Power, the province’s organizer, told GGRAsia last year.
The new airport will be about 78 kilometers (49 miles) northwest of the Hot Tram Strip. Ho Chi Minh’s current aviation center is about 112 kilometers away from Hot Tram.
The first phase of Long Tan International Airport will take 39 months to be built, according to a Vietnamese news agency, citing airport corporation, the operator of the country’s state-run airport and an investor in the Long Tan airport scheme. The first phase will provide a runway and passenger terminal that can handle 25 million passengers a year, the media reported.
The selection of contractors among the three competing consortiums will be completed this month.
The multi-stage Long Tan airport plan will cover 5,500 hectares (13,591 acres), with an investment budget of 336.63 trillion yuan ($14.3 billion). When all work is completed by 2050, the airport hub will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year, local media reported.
A working group of officials from various national levels has been set up to oversee the work and report its progress to the prime minister, government news outlet VGP said in April.
