New York’s gambling industry has been growing over the past two years, and the New York Responsible Play Partnership is certainly protecting local gamblers. This week, officials from the three-party group held a press conference at the Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady in northern New York to discuss preventing problem gambling.
The New York Responsible Play Partnership was established 10 years ago as a three-way organization involving the New York State Game Commission, the State Addiction Service Support Agency, and the New York Council for Problem Gambling.
At Monday’s conference, NYSGC Executive Director Robert Williams cited some of the partnership’s achievements in tackling problem gambling over the past few years. He took the QR code as an example, which was the nation’s first lottery QR code that allows direct access to problem gambling experts when scanned.
He also added that the group held a problem gambling event in May because it wanted to ensure proper attention was paid to the issue for 12 months of the year. In addition, Mr. Williams explained that most gamblers bet in a responsible way, and to them it was just a game. But this doesn’t apply to everyone because some people consider it more than a game.
In early 2023, on the occasion of the state’s mobile sports betting market anniversary, Gov. Cathy Hochul reported that the sector had generated more than $700 million in revenue and more than $16 billion in bets. About $6 million of the tax revenue has been spent on problem gambling education and treatment.
At the press conference, officials also saw players talk about the state’s voluntary self-exclusion program, which, as the name suggests, allows them to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling for a certain period of time. After registration, you will not be able to participate in betting on horse racing, off-track betting, video games, and commercial gaming venues and digital fantasy sports.
Amy McBride, assistant director of prevention at the state board on problem gambling, said the VSE program allows local residents to fill out forms at home and notarize documents digitally. She explained that people who suffer from problem gambling often have shame and guilt, and they should be removed so that people can get the help they need.
In March, the New York Center for Problem Gambling Resources said it would look into the impact of mobile sports betting on local residents. According to the Western New York Center for Problem Gambling Resources, New Yorkers invested about $16.3 billion in the first year, doubling last year, unprecedented for the state.
