China Lottery sales up 12 pct in October

Official lottery sales in mainland China rose 12.2% year-on-year to about 42.23 billion yuan ($6.08 billion), according to official data from China’s finance ministry. Monthly figures show the growth recorded last month was once again supported by an increase in sports lottery sales.

Sports lottery sales rose 20.5% year-on-year to 23.31 billion yuan in October, while welfare lottery sales rose 3.3% to 18.92 billion yuan, the ministry said.

Total sales of the two lottery systems in the first 10 months of this year amounted to 425.73 billion yuan, up 22.2% year-on-year. Welfare lottery sales rose 4.1% year-on-year to about 184.24 billion yuan, while sales of sports lottery products rose 40.8% to nearly 241.5 billion yuan.

According to the Ministry of Finance, this year’s sale of sports lottery tickets was promoted by the FIFA World Cup. The tournament was held between June 14 and July 15.

Mainland Chinese authorities updated China’s rules on official lottery tickets in August. These updates take effect on Oct. 1 and aim to reduce regulations for licensing lottery products offline, several experts conducting industry research told GGRAsia.

However, uncertainty remains over whether Chinese authorities will lift the suspension, which has been in place since 2015, regarding the online sale of official lottery products.
