BCLC wins prestigious award for increasing inclusivity

So far, the British Columbia Lottery Company maintains the highest position in the world. Last week, the Crown agency said it had been recognised by its Canadian head of human resources for its efforts to advance diversity, inclusion and belonging or DI&B. BCLC has been allocated a five-star diversity and inclusion employer for its relentless efforts for true inclusion.

BCLC is a state-owned company that regulates and provides land-based and online gambling and lottery products in British Columbia and prides itself on reinvesting all of its proceeds into the state’s economy as funds pour into healthcare, education, and support for local community groups and organizations.

Last week, BCLC became the only Canadian company to be recognized in this segment as a 5-Star Diversity & Inclusion Employer for achieving more than that in its efforts to promote inclusivity. This sector is another socially responsible honour for the Crown organisation, as it is given to the best companies employing between 500 and 2,499 people.

Sandy Austin, interim head of people at Crown Corporation, said BCLC is an important point for them to strive to provide a win-win for people as a social purpose company and to foster a more inclusive culture. The executive shared that while Crown is proud of its achievements, there is still more work to be done about diversity, inclusion, and belonging for all.

At Crown, DI&B means investing in locals and introducing inclusive policies, processes and structures to create an inclusive culture that supports the growth and development of all employees, and aims to build a work environment without discrimination and an open working environment from a variety of perspectives.

Back in 2021, BCLC launched a new DI&B policy that supports respect, integrity, and community values. It also strengthens the Crown’s commitment to equity, inclusion and anti-racism. The Crown believes this process will be a long time with a lot of work to be done, but is enthusiastic and committed to making it a reality.

Recently, BCLC was also recognized by Corporate Knights for their community welfare and service. In March, Corporate Knights released its first social purpose report, titled “The Path to Social Purpose Transition: Helping Businesses Transition from “Words” to “Do,” which determined BCLC had a platinum rating for its social purpose practice.
