The head of one of Korea’s leading foreign-only casino companies hopes to see a “good effect” in terms of “future” business arising from the interest in Korea, which can be stimulated by the visa-free entry system during August for visitors from Japan, Taiwan or Macau.
“The plan will have a good effect, but we will be able to say more about it in about two weeks,” a spokesperson for Grand Korea Leisure (GKL) Limited said in response to GGRA’s telephone inquiry.
GKL previously told GGRAsia that the tourist visa program, which resumed on June 1 after a nearly two-year suspension, took a month to process requests from qualified visitors, including Japanese.
Local authorities announced a visa-free offer for a section of Korea’s tourist market on Wednesday. The plan includes a visit to Jeju Island, where many foreigner-only casinos are located, and a trip to the Korean Peninsula. The plan runs from Aug. 4-31.
These visitors are still required to register online with the K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) system 72 hours before boarding the incoming flight.
An official from Jeju Shinhwa World, which runs a foreign-only landing casino on Jeju Island, told GGRAsia that “as it is a sudden announcement of temporary measures, I doubt airlines will be able to follow up.”
“Five out of eight Jeju casinos are currently closed, which, coupled with the suspension of tourism due to the pandemic, can hopefully be a momentum to enable the reopening of the currently suspended casinos,” a Jeju official told GGRAsia.
South Korea came in second with 3.27 million Japanese tourists, Taiwan third with 1.26 million and Macau 23rd with 50,000, according to Wednesday’s announcement of visa-free travel in August 2019, the most recent pre-pandemic trading period.
