Gov. Kathy Hochul speaks on casinos in southern states

In a recent debate, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said a few things about the state’s upcoming retail casino expansion. Earlier this year, the state legislature announced fast tracking of game licenses in three states. And Hochul, a fan of having more land-based casinos, said he doesn’t prefer places.

In early April, Empire State officially included the acceleration of downstate casino licenses. Previously, there was a moratorium until 2023, which was introduced as a way to allow upstate casinos to adapt to the gaming environment. But now the state wants to create new jobs and provide more revenue. And there are many candidates for three.

Many people think of Governor Hochul as a likely candidate to win elections later this year, and in a recent debate, she expressed her thoughts on expanding the Downstate Casino. She said she was quite happy with the plan to accelerate the process, but she did not provide a preferred place for three possible licences. She also said the state is currently collecting information and data on the issue.

She explained that she would not point to a specific location because she wanted to make a decision and leave the existing site to an outside expert who would also review it. Democrats reminded that there are candidates for licenses in Queens, West Chester and Nassau, along with proposals to hold licenses in Manhattan, New York.

Her task as governor is to remain open to all the aforementioned possibilities, and in her words, she has made it clear that that is exactly what she is doing. Her former governor, Andrew Cuomo, played a major role in developing the state’s gambling sector when his cabinet lobbied for the introduction of online sports betting.

This became a reality on January 8, 2022, when four state-accredited mobile operators launched a new chapter in Empire State gambling. The New York State Gaming Commission has obtained a total of nine licenses, and since its launch, the market has succeeded in generating more than US$250 million in tax game revenue from the state budget.

In addition, state legislators are working on more ways to strengthen Empire State’s gaming sector. State Senator Joe Addabbo has previously shared plans to add fixed dividend bets to horse racing. Addabbo also noted that it will be committed to introducing online casino gambling in the fiscal year 2023-2024.

Bill S8471, which attracts more online sports betting operators, and Bill S8412 which decriminalizes the state’s iGaming, have been passed by the Racing Games and Betting Board. But local racinos fear that if the state’s iGaming is restricted to fully licensed operators, it could lead to potential cannibals. But the senator explained that this would not be the case and that the issue would be further analyzed.
