Konami Games Sector Up 49pct For First Time In 9 Months

Konami Holdings said on Thursday that sales in its gaming and systems division, which includes casino equipment, rose 49.2% year-over-year in the nine months to Dec. 31. Those sales were slightly above 27.86 billion yen ($216.4 million) compared with 18.68 billion yen in the same period a year earlier.

The gaming division posted a profit of 3.88 billion yen in the reporting period, up 53.8% year-over-year.

The Japanese entertainment giant’s gaming and systems division includes the supply of casino slot machines and casino floor management systems.

In the casino gaming segment, Konami operates outside of Japan through Konami Australia Pty Ltd and U.S.-based Konami Gaming Inc.

Konami Holdings said on Thursday that “operations” at its North American and Australian casino facilities “have returned to pre-COVID-19 levels” during the reporting period.

“Other markets in some countries and regions are still affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the market as a whole is on the path to recovery,” it said.

The company added: “Profitability has improved with a range of cost-cutting initiatives despite the impact of soaring parts costs due to the global supply chain disruption.”

Konami Holdings is also involved in digital entertainment and sports, including Japan-focused Pachinko gaming division, video games and mobile games. The group’s overall sales during the period rose 5.5% year-on-year to nearly 226.8 billion yen.

Gross profit for the nine months to Dec. 31 rose 34.9% from a year ago to 27.57 billion yen.

The company said sales rose “due to the successive launches of titles in the group’s core division and the depreciation of the Japanese yen.”

It added that profit performance was negatively impacted by “increased energy costs” and “reduced product costs” due to the launch of new titles and promotional efforts.
